Connections Across the Ice

The Antarctic season is full of surprises, and the BELARE 2024–2025 team has already experienced a few remarkable moments. This season, the team has supported scientists from the Alfred Wegener Institute during aerial radar surveys of the ice edge, part of the RINGS project, which studies changes at the Antarctic Ice Sheet margin.

Another unexpected highlight came on December 18th, 2024, when a rotating CHINARE team from Zhongshan Station made a brief stop at Princess Elisabeth Antarctica to refuel on their way to Ultima Air Field. BELARE team leader Alain Hubert welcomed the visiting scientists and crew, giving them a short tour of the station and sharing a few moments of Antarctic camaraderie.

These special encounters remind us that even in the remote and extreme environment of Antarctica, collaboration and shared experiences make each season unique.
