The FROID Project - Exploring Ancient Ice
The FROID project, funded by BELSPO, is on a mission to uncover million-year-old ice in the vicinity of the Sør Rondane Mountains. These ancient ice layers contain invaluable records of past climate, atmospheric composition, and environmental changes, helping scientists better understand Earth’s long-term climate history.
To support extended fieldwork far from the Princess Elisabeth Antarctica Station, the FROID team relies on specially equipped living containers with solar panels, providing a practical and comfortable base for their scientific operations. With the support of the IPF engineering team, these remote field camps allow researchers to safely spend extended periods in some of Antarctica’s most remote and challenging environments.
Through their work, the FROID scientists aim to unlock the secrets stored in Antarctica’s oldest ice — offering a window into our planet’s distant past and the processes that shaped it.
